10 Things Super Mario Maker 3 NEEDS (That SMM2 Doesn’t Have)

When Super Mario Maker 2 released on Nintendo Switch in 2019, it seemed like it had everything the original game didn’t. It added a better interface, story mode, a Super Mario 3D World game style, new themes, and so much more. However, there are still some things that would be nice to include in a third Mario Maker game. So, here’s ten things I think Super Mario Maker 3 will need that Maker 2 doesn’t have.

#10: Copying Items Between Sub-Areas

In some cases, you might want something you built in one sub-area to be copied in the other. However, Super Mario Maker 2 doesn’t let you copy anything between sub-areas. It would be nice Super Mario Maker 3 if you could copy a set of blocks to the other sub-area. In SMM2, you’re forced to rebuild in the other sub-area. That can get annoying.

#9: More Mixing and Matching

For some reason, the Super Mario 3D World isn’t a fan of Mario Maker’s original philosophy of mixing and matching. The 3D World game style doesn’t have several items that are in the other game styles, even deleting what you’ve built if you want to switch game styles between the four 2D games and 3D World. It would be a nice change if every game style in Super Mario Maker 3 had the same items (at least mostly).

#8: Water Features in All Themes

Even though we’ve seen rising and lowering water features in tons of different ways and themes in the 2D Mario games, you can only control the water in Super Mario Maker 2’s forest theme. It would be nice if you could use water features in other game styles in Super Mario Maker 3. Now, it makes sense that poison and lava are in the night forest and castle themes respectively, but it doesn’t make sense with water.

#7: Ice or Penguin Suit

With Super Mario Maker 2 and its DLC, almost every 2D Mario power-up is included in the game – except for the penguin suit. The penguin suit is one of the most fun 2D Mario power-ups, letting Mario throw ice balls, slide across levels, and have better control while swimming. It’s such a fun power-up that could be used in so many neat ways in Mario Maker. It definitely needs a spot in Super Mario Maker 3.

#6: Tanooki Suit in Super Mario 3D World Style

Another power-up that should be added in the Tanooki Suit from 3D Land and 3D World. Tanooki Mario in these games is a joy to use, letting Mario flutter through the air or attack enemies with his tail. Since the Super Leaf already exists in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, along with the other flying power-ups being the Cape Feather and Super Acorn, it’s surprising the Tanooki Leaf isn’t already here. It definitely needs to be included in SMM3.

#5: More Sub-Areas Per Level

In Super Mario Maker 2, you can make levels that are up to 2 sub-areas. It would be really neat if you could add more, granting you more space in your level and letting you use more than 2 different themes in your level. This could make levels even more expansive and creative than ever before, even if having more sub-areas means shortening each one. It would still be a nice inclusion in SMM3.

#4: More Bosses

Super Mario Maker 3 needs more bosses. SMM2 only has the Koopalings and Bowser. It would be neat to see even more 2D bosses in SMM3, like Super Mario Bros. 2’s bosses, Reznor from Super Mario World, and the unique bosses from New Super Mario Bros., for example. It would be really fun to fight more bosses in Mario Maker than just the easy Koopalings.

#3: Ability to Turn Off Time Limit

With Super Mario Maker 2, people have made more levels that are larger, focusing more and exploring or solving puzzles. This isn’t what previous Mario games’ levels are all about, which is why Super Mario Maker shouldn’t require you to have a timer. Even at the highest time, 500 seconds isn’t enough time for some levels. I’ve run into this problem myself, making levels more focused on taking your time and exploring, making it likely this will cause you to eventually run out of time. SMM3 should let you disable the timer indefinitely.

#2: Multiple Clear Conditions Per Level

Super Mario Maker 2 introduced something no other Mario title has before: clear conditions. These challenges force players to complete a specific task before they can finish. However, you can only have one clear condition per level. In Super Mario Maker 3, it would be cool if you were allowed to have more. Imagine a level that includes multiple different objectives for you to complete before you can finish, almost like a Pikmin game. This would make for some really neat levels that aren’t possible in SMM2.

Best Super Mario Maker 2 Worlds Worth Playing Through

#1: Uploading Super Worlds Without Uploading Every Level

One major flaw with the Super World feature in Super Mario Maker 2 is how you upload it. You can only upload a Super World if every level included in it is uploaded, which to me makes zero sense. Why can’t you just clear check every level and upload it that way? It would make it much more reasonable in SMM3.

What do you hope would be added in Super Mario Maker 3? Let me know in the comments.
