Nintendo Switch 2 — Is It Worth It? (1 Month Later Review)

Even after a month since its launch, people are still wondering if the Nintendo Switch 2 is worth getting now or later. Well, after playing it a lot during that month, I think I’m ready to discuss my thoughts on the system, as well as give some information for those still looking for one. So, let’s discuss on what you should know before you buy, and why it’s worth getting it or waiting.

What to Know Before you Buy

For anyone who knows nothing about the new system or the original system, the Nintendo Switch 2 is a hybrid video game console. That means that you can play games on the device itself or connect the system to your television. The Switch 2 comes with many accessories, one being the dock. Once plugged in and hooked up to your TV, you can seamlessly insert the system into the dock to have your game show up on the big screen. The Switch 2’s main controllers are the Joy-Con 2 controllers. These are two controllers that each basically make up one half of a normal controller. The controllers can both be magnetically attached to the system itself to play in handheld mode, forming one device. If you’re playing on the TV, you can play with just the Joy-Cons, connect them to the Joy-Con grip to make it feel like one whole controller, or pass one Joy-Con to a friend to play multiplayer games by holding the controllers sideways.

The system, 2 controllers, dock, grip, and the Joy-Con 2 straps all come packaged with the system. When buying the system, there’s two main versions: the base model ($449 USD) or the Mario Kart World bundle ($500 USD). Both include the same system and aforementioned accessories, but the bundle includes a copy of Mario Kart World for $30 less than the standard retail price. Note that with the bundle (in the US) you’ll get either a download code for the game or it will come pre-installed. Either way, it will probably take a while for the game to fully download before you can play. Now, knowing all that, is it worth buying the console yet?

Why It’s Worth Getting Now

If you’re a Nintendo fan and you want to play Nintendo games, I don’t see why it matters when you get the system. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of Mario Kart, there’s not much of a reason to wait to get the system until a game you want comes out. Otherwise, there could be some rational reasons for some people to not yet want to buy the console. However, here’s two big reasons why I think it’s worth buying it now or at least not waiting for a certain time.

Reason 1: Great Games with More to Come

As of writing, Mario Kart World is the main first-party title on the Switch 2. Even if you’re not a huge Mario Kart fan, getting a massive new Mario game bundled with the system for $30 cheaper than if you got the game by itself is a great deal. The game includes so much to do outside of just racing that it can be fun for everyone for different reasons. Plus, not only that, but tons of great games are coming soon. This includes Donkey Kong Bananza in just a couple of weeks, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and of course, many other big titles to come in the next few years.

Reason 2: Price Drop is Unlikely

One big factor that may be haltering some people from buying a Switch 2 is the price. The system retails for $450 normally or $500 with Mario Kart World. Plus, all of the other accessories are stupid expensive as well, such as the $85 Pro Controller or the $55 Camera. And while Nintendo has reduced hardware prices in the past, I’m here to tell you that a Switch 2 price drop is incredibly unlikely, at least within the first couple of years. Back in 2011, Nintendo dropped the 3DS price from $250 at launch to just $170 after five months, and after the 2012 launch of the Wii U, the Deluxe Set’s $350 price tag was dropped to $300 by the following September. So, while early price drops have happened in the past, there’s one major difference between the Switch 2 and those situations: those consoles were failing and needed a price drop to find success. The Switch 2, on the other hand, sold more consoles in its first week than the 3DS and Wii sold in their first weeks combined. So, unless Switch 2 sales slump massively in the next few months, a price drop is very unlikely.

Why It’s Okay to Wait

Like I said, I don’t think it matters much whether you get the system now or wait a year, but there are some reasons as to why getting a Switch 2 isn’t necessary. A lot of the big 3rd-party games can be played on other systems at very similar quality, meaning unless you’re a fan of just Nintendo, there’s not much of a reason yet outside of Mario Kart. Here’s two main reasons as to why it’s okay to wait for the console.

Reason 1: The Switch is Still Alive and Well

Unlike some systems like the Wii U, the Nintendo Switch isn’t getting discontinued just because it’s been replaced. The Switch still has many games coming out, including Rhythm Heaven Groove and Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, both coming to Switch next year. When the Switch came out in 2017, the Wii U discontinued immediately, making it obsolete the minute its successor hit store shelves. The 3DS proved that this wasn’t always necessary, as it got new games for three years after the Switch’s release before it was finally discontinued.

Reason 2: Big Upcoming Titles are Being Cross-Released

Not only is the Switch still getting games, but many of this year’s 1st-party heavy-hitters are being released on the Switch with Switch 2 Editions, effectively making them cross-released titles. Games including the much-anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A will not be Switch 2 exclusive, meaning you won’t miss out on some of Nintendo’s biggest titles throughout the remainder of 2025 if you don’t get a Switch 2.

So, there’s my thoughts on the Switch 2 and whether or not you should buy one yet. In my opinion, I think if you want to get the system, get it as soon as you find it’s available. The system will likely be Nintendo’s main focus for next few years, and I doubt anything like a price drop will happen. The system is really great, even for users who are familiar with the original Switch. Anyway, if you have a Switch 2, let me know your thoughts in the comments and good luck to anyone still on the hunt.
