While the Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its great superheroes and exciting action, sometimes these characters can make us sad. Action and violence, especially with supernatural or heavyweight forces, unsurprisingly results in death and heartbreak. So, here are the 10 saddest MCU moments (in my opinion).

#10: Yondu’s Sacrifice – “Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2”
Throughout the Guardians of the Galaxy films, Yondu Udonta was seen as a guy that Peter Quill really didn’t like and that audiences didn’t see as a great guy either. However, after learning about what happened with Yondu and Peter in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, it became a surprisingly heart-wrenching scene when Yondu sacrificed his own life to get Peter to safety when Ego’s planet exploded. It’s very sad to see after all that they’ve been through.

#9: I’m With You Till the End of the Line – “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”
Captain America: The Winter Soldier probably has the best character development in the entire MCU, which makes for some sad scenes. Seeing Steve Rogers fight his best friend he thought he lost in the 1940s was very hard to watch. By the end when Steve was done and told Bucky to “finish his mission” before saying a line Bucky said to him in WWII, the friendship of these two starts to get really difficult to watch.

#8: Peter’s Mom – “Guardians of the Galaxy”
The very beginning of the original Guardians of the Galaxy does a great job of getting the audience to feel for the main character, Peter Quill, with the death of his mom; but to convey this, Marvel had to make it heart-wrenching. The combination of his mom’s last words, Peter’s heartbreaking reaction and screaming is enough to get you crying before you even know the characters.

#7: The Vision is Broken – “Avengers: Infinity War”
Everything about the finale of Avengers: Infinity War is somber, including some moments that we’ll talk about later. For now, let’s talk about Vision. Not only did Wanda Maximoff have to kill Vision to stop Thanos from retrieving the mind stone, but when he brought Vision back to life he killed him again to take the stone. It’s a very difficult sequence to witness, with many reasons to find it sad. And that’s just the beginning to the tragedy of Infinity War’s ending.

#6: Aunt May’s Death – “Spider-Man: No Way Home”
There were a lot of sad and dark moments from the finale of this Spider-Man trilogy, and it all stemmed from one moment. During a deadly fight with Green Goblin, Aunt May is killed from a pumpkin bomb, and all Peter can do is hear her say an iconic Spider-Man line. Aunt May’s death causes Peter to become vengeful, and later in the movie as he gets very close to murdering the Goblin, it really starts to get hard to watch. Plus, Aunt May was just a fun character to begin with, and she was one of the last people that understood him, so it was hard to see her die.

#5: Black Widow’s Fall – “Avengers: Endgame”
Of all the sad moments in Avengers: Endgame, the two main Avengers that died were definitely the hardest sequences to watch. As Hawkeye and Black Widow venture to Vormir to find the soul stone, our hearts all sunk. We already knew how to get the infinity stone after Infinity War, so it was apparent that only one Avenger would return. Unfortunately, Black Widow was the Avenger to sacrifice. It was a sad moment, both for Hawkeye, who kept trying to have himself sacrificed instead, and the audience. Heart-wrenching is an understatement.

#4: Into the Ice – “Captain America: The First Avenger”
How did Captain America get from the 1940s to 2012 without aging? He did it with ice. The end of Captain America: The First Avenger was a tough act to watch. Flying a jet headed to New York City at blazing speeds, Steve Rogers has no choice but to crash the plane in the icy water as Peggy Carter listens to his apparent final words. The moment is heartbreaking for both the characters and audiences, and was a big turning point for the story.

#3: The Soul Stone – “Avengers: Infinity War”
I already talked about Black Widow’s sacrifice for the Soul Stone, but the moment that was even sadder was Gamora’s sacrifice in Avengers: Infinity War. Only one difference though: Gamora didn’t want to fall. The muted sequence of Gamora screaming as Thanos drags her over the edge is nothing less than heartbreaking.

#2: Should’ve Gone for the Head – “Avengers: Infinity War”
Infinity War sure had some sad moments, huh? Well, none compare to the movie’s finale. Thanos snaps his fingers after retrieving the 6th infinity stone. What follows are difficult sequences of some of our favorite heroes dusting away. While we knew that they would be coming back, nothing is more somber than watching a teenage kid saying “I don’t want to go” over and over again before dusting away. It’s one of the MCU’s darkest and saddest moments; no doubt about that.

#1: Iron Man’s Death – “Avengers: Endgame”
Unsurprisingly, the death of the MCU’s lead superhero is undoubtedly the saddest moment in the entire franchise. To finish the deadly battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, Tony Stark takes the stones from the mad titan and uses them to dust his entire army. Unfortunately, Stark was unable to survive the power of the stones, and died mere moments later. Everyone saying their goodbye to him, as well as the incredible funeral scene, are nothing short of heartbreaking.
