A Minecraft Movie – REVIEW (Spoiler-Free)

Since 2009, Minecraft has been captivating the minds and hearts of players worldwide, enforcing creativity among a always-growing community. Despite the world being strictly made up of simply-designed blocks, the game has managed to become one of the most well-known video games of all time — so of course, there was no doubt that the movie industry would eventually take advantage of the game’s overwhelming popularity. And thus, here we are in 2025, with A Minecraft Movie now playing in theaters worldwide. There’s only one question: even though the game is all about creativity, does the movie provoke the same idea, or does it just go completely off the rails, only being a source of silly entertainment based on a popular cast and source material? Well, here’s my thoughts on the movie, from both my movie-critic standpoint and my geek-moviegoer standpoint. NOTE: I will not be sharing any major spoilers from the movie in this review, but this is a warning because some details may be considered spoilers to some.

I’ll start with my geek-moviegoer standpoint since it’s definitely the more positive one of the two. As a whole, A Minecraft Movie takes many ideas from the Minecraft games and mixes them with an over-the-top duo of Jack Black and Jason Mamoa, resulting in a creative but very silly adventure. This also results in the movie being extremely funny and entertaining, but the humor is basically hit-or-miss depending on who’s watching. The characters aren’t entirely in-depth but give a relatable and likable boost to the film overall. Putting all of this together makes for a strange but comical movie — but again, the comedy is certainly the overly-silly type, and those who don’t care for it probably won’t find much else of interest in the movie.

My movie critic standpoint definitely has some other views in comparison. From any general standpoint, A Minecraft Movie is just like most other movies of its nature (based on well-known source material), which is fun but barebones. The so-called ‘plot’ definitely takes a backseat here, with familiar tropes encompassing the overall concept of the film. Because of this, most of the plot is very predictable. It’s not hard to see what’s about to happen. Outside of the bland storyline and silliness, however, are the special effects. For a movie set in a world like the Minecraft overworld, A Minecraft Movie’s visuals are spectacular. The world looks just like the video game, and multiple scenes are littered with details, some only die-hard Minecraft fans will understand. For me, the very last scene in the Overworld was the only time it semi-looked like the actors were in front of green screens. The movie is a visual delight, whether you know the game world or not.

2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which just like A Minecraft Movie is based on incredibly well-known video games, is very similar in many regards to the Minecraft-based film. Both movies take characters from the real world who are dealing with normal issues and throw them into the imaginative worlds from their source material, to which they have to save that world to return to the real world. Of course, both movies have very prominent differences, but a key one of the storytelling aspect is simply the source material. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was able to successfully escape an issue many movies like it face, which is an undermining of the source material. Super Mario’s cinematic adventure felt as if it appreciated what it was based on, despite the world overall being incredibly unique and peculiar, especially to audiences unfamiliar with Super Mario. A Minecraft Movie, on the other hand, feels like the opposite. At times it feels like the movie actually makes fun of Minecraft, even if it also references tons of small details in the games. Characters literally proclaim that the world makes no sense.

A Minecraft Movie seems as if it’s aimed at three main audiences: general moviegoers, kids and families, and of course the Minecraft fans. General moviegoers will most likely find the movie visually appealing and engaging, especially with Jack Black, Jason Mamoa, and the rest of the cast — but they’ll probably have a minecart-load of questions after watching. Kids will most likely enjoy the movie for its bright visuals and constant comedy. Minecraft fans will most likely have tons of fun with all the details from the games the movie offers. The film acts as exciting and silly entertainment, but as a movie in general, it lacks creativity in its story despite that being the overall message of the adventure.

As a movie in general, ‘The Minecraft Movie’ is overly silly and led by a familiar plot — but otherwise it’s all that it needs to be: wildly entertaining and stupidly exciting.
