My Theory of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ From the Second Trailer

The official main trailer for Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally out and it sure showed a lot. A key thing to note is that we don’t know the complete plot of the film. It’s still a bit unclear, but people have their theories. I have one as well, and it’s primarily based on one clip of the entire trailer! So, here’s my theory of The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

First, the scene of the trailer. While Princess Peach is talking in the middle of the trailer, we can just briefly see some Toads looking at what looks like a live, interactive map of Bowser’s location around several worlds. Now these worlds may hint at some interesting implications to the movie’s plot, especially the island Bowser seems to be leaving. Now at first, it looked like this map had two Bowser lava lands. However, at closer inspection, the island on the right seems to be different. To see how it connects, let’s head back to the original teaser trailer.

In the first scene of the teaser trailer revealed last month on October 6th, Bowser invades an ice city inhabited by penguins by burning it down and stealing a Power Star. If you look at the city before its desecration, you’ll notice the buildings have round, sphere-like tops. In the bleak land Bowser is leaving on the map in the new trailer, the structures have these same dome-shaped tops. Plus, the bottom of the island is blue, like the ice. Bowser even seems to have a Power Star as he leaves. So basically, these Toads are watching this map as Bowser burned down the Penguin City, but where to next?

Well, possibly the Mushroom Kingdom. My idea of the movie’s plot is that Bowser is trying to rule the world with the ultimate combined power of the many Power Stars. If he is heading to the Mushroom Kingdom now and takes their Power Star, it would give an incentive for Peach, Mario, and Toad to get it back before Bowser gets the rest of the Stars. Heck, Peach could have gotten Mario right out of Brooklyn to help after their Power Star was abducted.

Another detail about this interactive map is the land above the Mushroom Kingdom. The design seems to be clearly based on Donkey Kong Country, which is probably the location of that colosseum where Mario fights the big ape himself at the beginning of the trailer. But why would he need to fight Donkey Kong there? Well, I have two ideas. One, the only way for Mario and his companions to get through the land is by winning a fight, but wouldn’t the Kongs want them to progress to help save their Power Star? Another idea is that Mario and the gang might be taking the Stars themselves to defeat Bowser, so he’ll need to fight the Kongs to get their Power Star.

Now here’s another theory for the story, and it’s based on a clip shown in the new trailer for just a second. Right before we see Tanooki Mario take flight, a giant ball of fire seems to blast right for Peach’s Castle – but what is around the castle? Well, it looks like six star icons, meaning that Bowser may need six Power Stars to put here. There are six lands after all on the map. Or, here’s another idea. This scene shows a giant flame heading for Peach’s Castle, like I said. But why? Well, maybe this is early into the movie. Maybe Peach already has the Power Stars before Bowser attacks and each star is blasted to the different lands. That would make sense why Mario, Peach, and Toad aren’t seemingly chasing Bowser and instead chasing the Power Stars.

That’s all for my theory. What did you think of the new trailer and what is you theory of the story? Let me know in the comments!
